Based on your specific orthodontic needs, our dentists may recommend a removable orthodontic appliance. There are several types of removable appliances available. Depending on your Individual needs and goals, we may suggest one or more of the following:
- Elastics (rubber bands) — Elastics helps improve how your upper and lower teeth fit together. Please remember to wear your elastics as directed to achieve the best results.
- Repositioning appliance – This appliance helps to move the lower jaw slightly forward to reduce overbites. It is removable, but it should be worn at all times (including when eating!), except when brushing your teeth.
- Retainer — Retainers are used to maintain your straight, beautiful smile after orthodontic treatment. There are several types of retainers available, and our team will help you determine which type is best suited to your needs.
- Separators or spacers — These are small rubber donuts which are placed between your teeth to push them apart in preparation for receiving regular orthodontic bands for braces. If you are wearing separators, be careful with what you eat and when you clean your teeth, as they can be easily dislodged by stick foods, toothpicks and floss.
- Headgear — Headgear is most often used to restrict the growth of the upper jaw and improve an overbite (overjet).
- Palatal expander — A palatal expander is a device used to create more space in the mouth by gradually widening the upper jaw. They are used for children while their mouths and jaws are still developing.
